Hi, I'm Carie.
I was born in Jamaica to a Chinese father and an Indian mother-both very young at the time. Eventually, I was raised by my Chinese grandmother, and in the late 1970s, we moved to Toronto, Canada. Since leaving Jamaica, I have often felt disoriented, caught in a lifelong quest to understand who I am and where I belong.
This search has shaped my passion for culture, identity, and belonging. These are the layers of the big word culture that matter to me and why I’ve felt compelled to explore them.
But over time, I’ve realized that understanding one’s culture can be a deeply intellectual pursuit, one that doesn’t always bring the feeling of connection we long for. I’ve come to see that true connection isn’t just about knowledge; it’s also about experience. It happens through the body; through taste, smell, movement, and creativity.
This is the perspective I bring to my work: a way of exploring identity that is both intellectual and sensory, both structured and fluid.
